From the President
January is the month of new beginnings. We resolve that we are going to be morepatient,
lose weight, spend less, save more, and find more time to quilt. Resolutions
are meant to be kept, but as the months wear on, we find that less and less
of them are kept. One of the easy resolutions that I make each year is to do
a “mitzvah”. For those unfamiliar with the Jewish word, “mitzvah”
is a good act or deed. Suzan and I, along with a small group of women make quilts
and give them to various charities. Fabric is solicited from manufacturers,
and we make simple quilts from their “dogs”. The quilts, far from
a work of art, serve a function of bringing warmth and comfort. While given
anonymously, they bring tremendous satisfaction to those involved that they have taken their skills and brought comfort to someone.
Make a resolution to do a “mitzvah” this year using your quilting
skills. It can be as simple as teaching your child/grandchild/ neighbor how
to make a quilt or donating your time and skill to one of the many groups that
seek quilts to give to those less fortunate. By teaching someone to quilt, or
making and donating one, a part of you gets passed along with each stitch. That
truly is a “mitzvah!”
Happy New Year,
Suzan Hirsch
